Black History Month

February 1, 2018

During the entire month of February, we celebrate Black History Month.

 A History:

Black History month is celebrated in Canada, as well as the United States and is celebrated in the United Kingdom and Netherlands in October. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard educated African American historian, advocated to have a  period of time to recognize the accomplishments and history of African Americans across the nation. This began with Negro History Week, which was first celebrated in 1926, and later renamed Black History Week in the 1970s. In 1976, February became recognized as Black History month. February was chosen as it was the birth month of two significant figures in history: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1995, the Canadian House of Commons recognized February as Black History month, after the motion was introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine; the first Black Canadian Woman to be elected to Parliament.
